Press Release 2010

For the third year running – or should we say walking – some intrepid young party goers will take the environmental efforts of Rocking the Daisies music festival to the next level, and WALK to the event from Cape Town to Cloof Wine Estate just outside Darling, a small town on the west coast of South Africa.

This year 40 people will be walking 2 days on a beautiful 60km hike through the west coast wild flower region via the beaches, conservation areas and farmlands. The walk was originally inspired by Greg Nicolson’s efforts in botanical research in 2008, when he walked from the Namibian border to Cape Town (680km over 28 days) to document and raise awareness of the rare and endangered wildflowers that occur within the road reserve that flanks the N7 national highway. Arriving home a few weeks before the festival, it was obvious he had to keep walking the talk, and so we got together and took steps towards raising awareness for the environmental initiatives at Rocking the Daisies.

Being South Africa’s premier eco-friendly music festival, Rocking the Daisies have put themselves on the line to encourage us all – and especially youth – that you don’t need to destroy the environment to have a good time. So they have rallied to the cause to make this happen.

We would like to thank Fruit & Veg City who have seen the value in this initiative and boldly stepped forward to support the project.

This year’s route is being developed by our guides to bring in a new array of vistas and habitats. The overnight camp at Silverstroomstrand is set to be a great little social gathering where you are encouraged to visit for a braai and camp with the walkers.
